Asanova’s debut film depicts a summer in the life of the 14-year-old music-obsessed Seva. His passion is playing the drums, which those around him repeatedly try to stop him from doing: at one point, his drums are thrown out of the window by his brother, a famous basketball player, at other times he arouses the displeasure of the neighbors, his father and grandmother. Everything about Seva is exuberant: whether his irrepressible urge to make music or his new feelings for Ira, who is the same age. He tries to approach her in clumsy fashion and attempts to impress her by doing headstands in the stairwell. Asanova’s artistic achievement here lies in how she represents the carefreeness and vulnerability of youth with great sensitivity, by way of an entirely everyday story.
